About Ayurveda
Ayurveda means āscience of lifeā in Sanskrit and originated 5000-6000 years ago on the Indian subcontinent. It is based on the knowledge that health originates from a perfect balance on a physical, mental and spiritual level.
Ayurveda identifies three types of energy that are present in everything and everyone. These are called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata is the energy of movement and flow, Pitta is the energy of metabolism and transformation and Kapha is the energy of structure and lubrication. Each of these have a function in the body and each person has a unique combination of these different energies, also called the Prakruti.
When the body becomes imbalanced due to external factors, like diet, environmental toxins, stress, lack of physical exercise, this can lead to health issues.
It often starts as a feeling of discomfort, lower immunity or feeling more tired. However, if this imbalance persists, on the longer term this can lead to actual symptoms and disease.
Ayurvedaās main goal is to restore this balance and with that remove symptoms and increase strength in the body.
A central focus in Ayurveda is on digestion. When the digestive fire (āagniā) is good, food will be digested optimally and from there tissue creation, like blood, fat, muscle and reproductive tissue is excellent, and elimination of waste is optimal.
Furthermore, accumulation of toxins play an important role in disease and elimination of these toxins is important from a curative as well as a preventative perspective.
Focus on Prevention
One important aspect of Ayurveda is the focus on Prevention. With all our daily stressors, pesticides and other toxins in our food, besides environmental toxins, and often insufficient exercise and too much screen time, it has become difficult for many people to live a balanced life in accordance with nature.
This is causing many of the ailments, people experience today, at a mental level (depression, anxiety) as well as at a physical level (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease). Just by simply living a healthy balanced conscious lifestyle, many of these can be reversed.
Consciousness-based Medicine
Maharishi Ayurveda is also called āConsciousness-based Medicineā as it includes consciousness as an essential factor for health.
Because of our busy lifestyles, many of us feel disoriented, lost and pushed around by different demands and expectations, without much clarity on what we really want from life. The connection to nature as well as to ourselves, our inner connection, has been lost for many, making it difficult to connect to our intuition, which is there to guide us and make the right decisions with regards to health and life. This is where transcendental meditation can help, by increasing consciousness and the connection with oneself, creating a clear perspective of oneās goals and visions in life.
